Some of the soil microorganisms are capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen and making it available for plants. To date, not much information is available about nitrogen fixation in commercial orchards. In our work, we study nitrogen fixation by soil crusts in irrigated deciduous orchards. We study N fixation in different soil types and climatic gradients, with the intention to identify the key factors which govern N fixation, and from that develop ways to enhance N fixation.
