Nitreite in the soil

Nitrite (NO2-) is an intermediate product of many of the soil microbial nitrogen transformations. Nitrite is known to be toxic to many plants, and its accumulation in the soil depends on the soil’s physical and chemical properties. In our work we study the short term buildup of nitrite (NO2-) in the root zone. We study the driving mechanisms for nitrite buildup, and how they differ under different soil types, irrigation water qualities, and fertigation regime.
